Baseball Tips On Hitting Should Be Mostly About You!

Baseball tips on hitting are very useful but quite often it comes down to what YOUR personal preference is. It’s because you are the hitter and you must feel comfortable at the plate. There are some very good guidelines and starting points and then it’s going to be up to you!

Stand close enough to the plate so that when you’re bent over slightly at the waist, you can extend the bat and still reach the outside corner of the plate.

As far as your baseball stance, make believe its basketball and you’re guarding another player. That’s an absolutely great starting point for the width of the feet, the bending of the knees and the bending of the waist. It will also give you a very good foundation to encourage effective baseball hitting. Your weight should be on the balls of your feet and you should be leaning slightly toward home plate.

Relax and let the air out. Tension is a hitter’s worst enemy.

Grip the bat where the fingers meet the hands. Not the palms. Use a medium grip because a tight grip will actually slow down your bat speed.

Your chin should be away from your chest. Your head should be facing the pitcher and completely relaxed, just as if you are watching television. Watch the pitcher’s cap, as it is a very good point to focus your eyes on because it is close to the height where the pitcher will be releasing the ball. Your eyes will be focused properly and will not have to refocus.

The height of the back elbow should be lined up like you are going to punch a balloon that’s about chest high and in front of you. Please don’t listen to that old cliché that’s been hollered out for decades to “keep your back elbow up.” It is one of the worst baseball tips on hitting you will ever hear. To have your back elbow up by your back ear works for very few hitters. The goal is to be in a good, comfortable baseball hitting position and having the back elbow up too high is NOT a comfortable baseball hitting position for most.

When the pitcher breaks his hands apart, shift your eyes from the pitcher’s cap to the pitcher’s window. (His window is simply where he releases the ball.) Go back and “load up” by cocking the wrists and the hips a split second before the pitcher releases the ball.

As the pitcher is actually releasing the ball, stride forward with your weight about 70% back on the INSIDE of the back leg and about 30% on your front foot.

As the ball is pitched, you must turn your head and follow the ball into the hitting zone. If you leave your head turned and facing toward the pitcher, when the ball arrives in the hitting zone you will be looking at the ball out of the corner of your eye which only makes baseball hitting tougher. It’s been referred to many times as “keeping your head behind the swing.”

When swinging, keep the front shoulder and front hip closed! The baseball hitting is not taking place by your third base coach if you are a right-handed hitter or by your first base coach if you are a left-handed hitter. Not staying “closed” is a recipe for disaster. If you do not keep your front side “closed,” three very negative things will occur that will prevent you from being efficient at baseball hitting:

1. Your head will pull off the ball when your front side opens up early and you will be looking at the ball out of the corner of your eye. Baseball hitting is difficult enough when you do see the ball well.

2.  Any power you have will be lost because your body will be in a different spot from where the actual baseball hitting is taking place.

3. Tough low and away strikes will cause many baseball hitting problems for you. It simply will be physically harder to reach the low and away pitch.

Throw the barrel of the bat at the ball. You can break all rules and not follow all the excellent baseball tips on hitting, but if you can consistently get the sweet spot of the bat on the ball, you will be very successful.

Please note that the “load up,” “stride” and “swing” are three separate movements. They are separate but they should happen very quickly and be done as smoothly as possible.

Remember that you go back slowly and you go forward quickly. It’s called the “calm before the storm.”

One of the best baseball tips on hitting you will ever learn is to keep the front elbow pointing downward at the START of your swing. If you don’t, you will be a fraction of a second late to the ball because you will have a very slight loop to your swing. A fraction of a second is an eternity when you consider a fastball takes less than a second to hit the catcher’s mitt. You must go from point “A” to point “B” in a straight line. The ONLY way to achieve this is by keeping the front elbow facing downward at the START of your swing. The ideal baseball swing is level ONLY at the point of contact and NOT before!

Feeling Guilty About Those Resolutions?

It’s been 17 days since we made our New Year’s resolutions. How’s it going for you? Not so good? You’re not alone. We start with good intentions but it doesn’t take much to derail our plan. We’re going to take a look at two reasons why our resolutions have failed and then we’ll come up with a better plan, one that will get us back on track and leave us feeling better about ourselves.


Unrealistic Resolution


When we watch all the ads on TV for diet pills and weight loss programs there’s an expectation that, if we give it a try, we can lose 25 pounds in short order, maybe even in two weeks. That is not necessarily true. The marketing experts who write those ads are good at what they do, so good, that we expect those results to be normal. Then, when we give it a try and we don’t drop weight that fast, it leaves us giving up in frustration.


In this case, the goal to lose 25 pounds is a good one but we weren’t being reasonable in the amount of time it would take. The adjustment needs to be in our expectation.


Resolution Too Complicated


Joining the health club and committing to Pilates three times a week is a great goal. But when you were scheduling those classes, did you have to put your schedule through contortions to get it to fit? Therein may lay the problem. If you had mental dialogue that went something like this: “If I leave work a little early on Tuesdays and my husband picks up the boys from basketball practice on Thursdays, I can do this!” that should have been a little red flag telling you that this would not dovetail very well into your lifestyle. No wonder you’ve only been to class twice this month. Admirable goal, too complicated to carry out.


So your plans haven’t worked out as you’ve hoped. Don’t beat yourself up and don’t feel guilty about it. Any experience that causes us to learn something is not failure. You learned that packing too much into your week doesn’t work, which is a valuable lesson. Keep on applying that and you can reduce the amount of stress in your life.


Now it’s time to re-group. We aren’t giving up on our goals and we’ve learned what doesn’t work. How can we have reasonable expectation and reduce the impact on our lifestyle? Creating a healthier lifestyle comes down to our daily choices. How can we make different choices in our daily routine to promote good health?


Start by looking at what you already do everyday to see where you can improve your health habits. Do you go out for lunch with you co-workers or hit the drive-thru for your meal? If your goal is weight loss, regularly eating fast food will make the achievement of that goal pretty difficult. Have you considered packing your lunch maybe just once or twice a week? Fast food is full of fats, calories, and sodium. The simple decision to pack your lunch a few times a week can have a significant impact on your health long term.


How about the goal of exercise? Is there a simple way to increase our activity without playing havoc on our schedule? You might want to take a look at how you are using your lunch hour. There was a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine on the effects of moderate exercise. Researchers studied 252,925 men and women between the ages of 50 and 71. Those that did a moderate amount of exercise (at least 30 minutes most days of the week) had a 27% decreased risk of death. A brisk 30 minute walk each day can have a powerful impact. What are you doing during you lunch hour?


The most important element in improving our health is consistency. It would be far better to do a 30 minute walk a few times every week than to do Pilates a few times a month. Look at how you are spending your day. There are always ways to make healthier decisions. And give up on those quick-fixes. Truly being healthy is not something a quick-fix will achieve but the accumulation of healthy daily decisions will.

Eat a well-balanced diet and safeguard your health by losing the weight prior to getting a tummy tuck. 

Stop Smoking!

Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications, whatever the surgery. Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen that is circulated to your skin cells by constricting your skin’s blood vessels. Less oxygenated skin cells have a slower healing response. If you smoke, your surgeon will probably recommend that you stop smoking at least two weeks before your Tummy Tuck is scheduled. Even then, smokers are at increased risk compared to non-smokers. Nicotine patches or gum should not be used to take the place of cigarettes or cigars as they also are associated with increased complications. 

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise is helpful in preparing for Abdominoplasty surgery. By exercising, you increase your metabolic rate and build muscle mass, which helps you to avoid gaining weight during the sedentary Tummy Tuck recovery time. A strong heart promotes a faster immune response – thus speeding up your Abdominoplasty recovery – so be sure to include plenty of aerobic exercise in your fitness regime. 

One risk faced by Tummy Tuck patients is the formation of blood clots in the legs. Your doctor will usually recommend that you take gentle walks during your recovery process to decrease the likelihood of experiencing this complication. However, having strong, well-toned leg muscles prior to surgery will help your body combat the formation of blood clots during the initial day or two after surgery, when you are unable to move or will be moving with difficulty.

 Another reason to exercise before undergoing Tummy Tuck surgery is that the best Abdominoplasty candidates are within 15 percent of their ideal weight. Abdominoplasty can lead to dramatic improvements to the appearance of people with small, but stubborn, fat deposits and loose, sagging skin around the belly area. It is not, however, necessarily the best choice for seriously overweight patients. Losing a lot of weight after an Abdominoplasty can also undermine Tummy Tuck results, leading to the need for further surgery to reshape the abdominal skin. Those whose weight prevents them from being good candidates for Abdominoplasty may wish to consider the possibility of liposuction instead.

 

TUMMY TUCK INCISIONS AND SCARS 

47)       Does an Abdominoplasty leave obvious scars?  

With a full tummy tuck, the horizontal incision is placed along the upper end of the pubic hair and extended toward the love handles or hips. It is important to discuss with the surgeon the design of the preferred underwear in order to make a strategically positioned incision. In most cases it is possible to put the incision in a position which will be covered by the patient’s preferred underwear or swimsuit. 

48)       Where the mini Tummy Tuck incision is made?  

During a Mini-Abdominoplasty, the plastic surgeon makes an incision that generally spans only the width of the pubic area, similar to a C-section incision. In both procedures, patients with excessive fat in the hips and flanks may have liposuction to contour these areas. However, liposuction is not recommended in the areas of the abdomen that are being stretched because this could cause damage to the blood circulation in those areas, leading to scarring or even skin loss. 

49)       Is there a difference in the size of the scars between the mini Tummy Tuck and the full tummy tuck? 

The amount of skin excised with the Tummy Tuck determines the length of the scar. For a full tummy tuck, a large amount of skin is removed and the resulting scar is usually from hip to hip. On the other hand, the scar resulting from a mini Tummy Tuck may be one half the size of a full tummy tuck. The size and location of the scar is planned with the patient based on their individual anatomy and desires.

 50)       Will the Tummy Tuck incision leave scars on my abdomen? Will I be able to use a two piece bathing suites without concerning about scars? 

During Mini-Abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck), the plastic surgeon makes an incision that generally spans only the width of the pubic area, and that is similar to a C-section incision. As with most surgical procedures, scars do result from tummy tucks. Typically, surgical scars appear to worsen during the first few months following a Tummy Tuck – this is normal. In some Tummy Tuck cases it may take up to a year before most scars flatten out and lighten in color. While scars never disappear completely, Tummy Tuck scars are placed in areas that will subsequently be covered by clothes, two piece bathing suits, etc. A skilled plastic surgeon makes this incision so that the resulting scar is hidden under a bikini or by undergarments. 

51)       Is there anything I can do to reduce scarring or bruising? 

For the first or two days after surgery most doctors recommend that you have as much rest as possible. Some patients feel that applying vitamin E or Aloe Vera to the scar may help. If you apply these creams do not rub the scar for about six weeks because you can damage the fragile new tissue. If you have tapes or stitches in place, do not use any cream or lotion unless instructed.

 

52)       Can I have the scars removed by laser? 

The cars can not be removed by laser. The scars will, however, fade with time but do not disappear.

 

53)       How should I take proper care of cosmetic surgery incisions? 

You will have steri strips over the incisions for the first four-to-six weeks after surgery. Once the steri strips come off, our team of doctors recommends Mepiform. It is a silicone sheeting that aids in the healing process of your scars. You will wear the Mepiform for approximately three months. 

54)       Would I have drains after surgery? 

Drains may be used to evacuate fluid that is produced under the skin; they are generally removed the week after your Tummy Tuck surgery. This allows the skin and superficial tissues to adhere faster to the underlying muscle and fibrous tissue. 55)       Would I have to remove sutures or staples?
